A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in ImageMagick up to 6.9.4 (Image Processing Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file coders/tiff.c of the component TIFF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Buffer overflow in coders/tiff.c in ImageMagick before 6.9.4-1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or unspecified other impact via a crafted TIFF file.
The bug was discovered 12/26/2016. The weakness was published 03/23/2017 by Bastien Roucaries (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-10059 since 12/26/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. Upgrading to version 6.9.4-1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
