A vulnerability has been found in elfutils up to 0.167 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function _libelf_set_rawdata_wrlock of the file elf_getdata.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The __libelf_set_rawdata_wrlock function in elf_getdata.c in elfutils before 0.168 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted (1) sh_off or (2) sh_size ELF header value, which triggers a memory allocation failure.
The bug was discovered 11/04/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/23/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.fedorahosted.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-10255 since 03/22/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
