Percona XtraBackup up to 2.3.5/2.4.4 xbcrypt inadequate encryption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Percona XtraBackup up to 2.3.5/2.4.4 (Backup Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component xbcrypt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a inadequate encryption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-326. The product stores or transmits sensitive data using an encryption scheme that is theoretically sound, but is not strong enough for the level of protection required. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

xbcrypt in Percona XtraBackup before 2.3.6 and 2.4.x before 2.4.5 does not properly set the initialization vector (IV) for encryption, which makes it easier for context-dependent attackers to obtain sensitive information from encrypted backup files via a Chosen-Plaintext attack. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2013-6394.

The bug was discovered 11/11/2016. The weakness was presented 03/23/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at lists.fedoraproject.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-6225 since 07/15/2016. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 82 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
