Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Jasper up to 1.900.21 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this issue is the function jas_realloc/mem_resize of the file base/jas_malloc.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple integer overflows in the (1) jas_realloc function in base/jas_malloc.c and (2) mem_resize function in base/jas_stream.c in JasPer before 1.900.22 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service via a crafted image, which triggers use after free vulnerabilities.
The bug was discovered 10/11/2016. The weakness was shared 03/23/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-9262 since 11/10/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 155 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97760 (Fedora 25 : jasper (2017-3dba8a70ce)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276517 (Fedora Security Update for jasper (FEDORA-2017-3dba8a70ce)).
Upgrading to version 1.900.22 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97760) and SecurityFocus (BID 94224†). The entry VDB-122468 is related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
