Jasper up to 1.900.24 jas_image.c integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Jasper up to 1.900.24 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file jas_image.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in jas_image.c in JasPer before 1.900.25 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted file.

The bug was discovered 11/19/2016. The weakness was shared 03/23/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9557 since 11/22/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 124 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 261322 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2016-9557), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.900.25 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (261322) and SecurityFocus (BID 94490†). The entries VDB-98462, VDB-98461 and VDB-98460 are related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
