administrator/components/com_media/helpers/media.php in the media manager in Joomla! 2.5.x before 2.5.14 and 3.x before 3.1.5 allows remote authenticated users or remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions and upload files with dangerous extensions via a filename with a trailing . (dot), as exploited in the wild in August 2013.
The weakness was disclosed 08/01/2013 by Jens Hinrichsen as [20130801] - Core - Unauthorised Uploads as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at developer.joomla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-5576 since 08/23/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Inadequate filtering leads to the ability to bypass file type upload restrictions.
A public exploit has been developed by metasploit and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 37 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:administrator/components/com_media/helpers/media.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69273 (Joomla! 2.5.x < 2.5.14 / 3.x < 3.1.5 .php. File Upload RCE), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12857 (Joomla! com_contact, com_weblinks, and com_newsfeeds Multiple Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.5.14 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
