Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple macOS up to 10.12.3 (Operating System). This affects some unknown functionality of the component python. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 06/15/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/27/2017 as HT207615 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-5636 since 06/16/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
A memory corruption issue existed in the handling of zip archives. This issue was addressed through improved input validation.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 36 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92471 (Amazon Linux AMI : python26 / python27,python34 (ALAS-2016-724)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176661 (Debian Security Update for python3.4 (DLA 1663-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.12.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (92471) and SecurityFocus (BID 91247†). The entries VDB-80763, VDB-88027, VDB-90422 and VDB-90620 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
