Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 10.2 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component ImageIO. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The DumpModeEncode function in tif_dumpmode.c in the bmp2tiff tool in LibTIFF 4.0.6 and earlier, when the "-c none" option is used, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer over-read) via a crafted BMP image.
The bug was discovered 04/07/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/27/2017 by Security Team with Qihoo 360 as HT207617 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-3619 since 03/21/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:
An out-of-bound read existed in LibTIFF versions before 4.0.7. This was addressed by updating LibTIFF in ImageIO to version 4.0.7.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 179 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99134 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (httpoxy)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171720 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for tiff (SUSE-SU-2018:3879-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99134) and SecurityFocus (BID 85919†). The entries VDB-81883, VDB-81884, VDB-92306 and VDB-93752 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
