Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple watchOS up to 3.1 (Smartwatch Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown code of the component WebKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
The regex code in Webkit 2.4.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) as demonstrated in a large number of ($ (open parenthesis and dollar) followed by {-2,16} and a large number of +) (plus close parenthesis).
The bug was discovered 03/07/2017. The weakness was shared 03/27/2017 by Gustavo Grieco as HT207602 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-9643 since 11/26/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499. The advisory points out:
An uncontrolled resource consumption issue was addressed through improved regex processing.
