Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in go-jose up to 1.0.3. This affects an unknown part of the component ECDH-ES. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a inadequate encryption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-326. The product stores or transmits sensitive data using an encryption scheme that is theoretically sound, but is not strong enough for the level of protection required. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
go-jose before 1.0.4 suffers from an invalid curve attack for the ECDH-ES algorithm. When deriving a shared key using ECDH-ES for an encrypted message, go-jose neglected to check that the received public key on a message is on the same curve as the static private key of the receiver, thus making it vulnerable to an invalid curve attack.
The bug was discovered 11/02/2016. The weakness was published 03/28/2017 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-9121 since 10/31/2016. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
