Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in go-jose up to 1.0.4. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component CBC-HMAC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
go-jose before 1.0.5 suffers from a CBC-HMAC integer overflow on 32-bit architectures. An integer overflow could lead to authentication bypass for CBC-HMAC encrypted ciphertexts on 32-bit architectures.
The bug was discovered 11/02/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/28/2017 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-9123 since 10/31/2016. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 145 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 1.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
