A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Revive Adserver up to 3.2.4/4.0.0 (Advertising Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Web Installer. The manipulation of the argument dbHost/dbUser with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (Reflected). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. Revive Adserver before 3.2.5 and 4.0.0 suffers from Reflected XSS. The Revive Adserver web installer scripts were vulnerable to a reflected XSS attack via the dbHost, dbUser, and possibly other parameters. It has to be noted that the window for such attack vectors to be possible is extremely narrow and it is very unlikely that such an attack could be actually effective.
The bug was discovered 09/28/2016. The weakness was shared 03/28/2017 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-9472 since 11/19/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
