Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Expat. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Expat, when used in a parser that has not called XML_SetHashSalt or passed it a seed of 0, makes it easier for context-dependent attackers to defeat cryptographic protection mechanisms via vectors involving use of the srand function.
The bug was discovered 06/03/2016. The weakness was disclosed 03/21/2017 as HT207599 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-6702 since 06/03/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Multiple issues existed in expat. These issues were addressed by updating expat to version 2.2.0.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96092 (Slackware 13.0 / 13.1 / 13.37 / 14.0 / 14.1 / 14.2 / current : expat (SSA:2016-359-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370347 (Apple iTunes Prior to 12.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2017-03-22-1) and (APPLE-SA-2017-03-22-2)).
Upgrading to version 12.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
