A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Ruby up to 2.1.7 (Programming Language Software). This issue affects the function DL::dlopen of the component Library Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does

correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
DL::dlopen in Ruby 1.8, 1.9.0, 1.9.2, 1.9.3, 2.0.0 before patchlevel 648, and 2.1 before 2.1.8 opens libraries with tainted names.
The bug was discovered 07/28/2015. The weakness was disclosed 03/30/2017 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-5147 since 07/28/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 29 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85654 (Debian DLA-299-1 : ruby1.8 security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196859 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Ruby1.9.1, Ruby2.0, Ruby2.3 Vulnerabilities (USN-3365-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
