Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU binutils up to 2.27 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function opy_special_section_fields of the component BFD Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library (aka libbfd), as distributed in GNU Binutils 2.28, is vulnerable to an invalid read (of size 8) because of missing a check (in the copy_special_section_fields function) for an invalid sh_link field before attempting to follow it. This vulnerability causes Binutils utilities like strip to crash.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2016. The weakness was presented 03/29/2017 as Bug 20931 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-7304 since 03/29/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 113 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
