A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 6 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function execCommand of the component JavaScript. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The execCommand method in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2 allows remote attackers to bypass the "File Download - Security Warning" dialog and save arbitrary files with arbitrary extensions via the SaveAs command.
The weakness was published 11/17/2004 by cyber flash as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at archives.neohapsis.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-1331 since 01/06/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
