A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (unknown version). This issue affects an unknown code block of the file ui/vnc.c of the component VNC Display Driver. The manipulation as part of a SetPixelFormat Message leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Qemu, when built with VNC display driver support, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (arithmetic exception and application crash) via crafted SetPixelFormat messages from a client.
The bug was discovered 12/08/2015. The weakness was disclosed 04/11/2017 by Prasad J Pandit (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8504 since 12/08/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 62 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88628 (Debian DSA-3469-1 : qemu - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168775 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for xen (SUSE-SU-2016:1154-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu-project.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (88628) and SecurityFocus (BID 78708†). The entries VDB-13216, VDB-13276, VDB-13279 and VDB-13280 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
