Linux Kernel up to 2.6 Binary a.out denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Binary Handler. The manipulation as part of a a.out leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The binfmt functionality in the Linux kernel, when "memory overcommit" is enabled, allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel oops) via a malformed a.out binary.

The bug was discovered 11/25/2004. The weakness was disclosed 11/24/2004 by Marcus Meissner with SuSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at suse.de. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-1074 since 11/29/2004. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20655 (Ubuntu 4.10 : linux-source-2.6.8.1 vulnerability (USN-39-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18290) and Tenable (20655). The entry 1008 is pretty similar.
