The archive_read_format_cab_read_header function in archive_read_support_format_cab.c in libarchive 3.2.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted file.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2016. The weakness was disclosed 05/01/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-10350 since 04/30/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 145 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101173 (Debian DLA-1006-1 : libarchive security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171705 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for libarchive (SUSE-SU-2018:3640-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
