The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was presented 09/10/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Ben Hawkes and Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as MS13-072 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-3855 since 06/03/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110216 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-072)).
Applying the patch MS13-072 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
