Rapid7 Metasploit Framework up to 4.13 Routes cross-site request forgery

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Rapid7 Metasploit Framework up to 4.13 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Routes Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

Routes used to stop running Metasploit tasks (either particular ones or all tasks) allowed GET requests. Only POST requests should have been allowed, as the stop/stop_all routes change the state of the service. This could have allowed an attacker to stop currently-running Metasploit tasks by getting an authenticated user to execute JavaScript. As of Metasploit 4.14.0 (Update 2017061301), the routes for stopping tasks only allow POST requests, which validate the presence of a secret token to prevent CSRF attacks.

The bug was discovered 06/14/2017. The weakness was published 06/15/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at community.rapid7.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-5244 since 01/09/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

Upgrading to version 4.14.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
