Tor up to 0.3.0.8 Guard Relay De-anonymization information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Tor up to 0.3.0.8 (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Guard Relay. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (De-anonymization). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Tor 0.3.x before 0.3.0.9 has a guard-selection algorithm that only considers the exit relay (not the exit relay's family), which might allow remote attackers to defeat intended anonymity properties by leveraging the existence of large families.

The bug was discovered 06/29/2017. The weakness was released 07/02/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at blog.torproject.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-0377 since 11/29/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101186 (FreeBSD : tor -- security regression (0b9f4b5e-5d82-11e7-85df-14dae9d5a9d2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 0.3.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (101186). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-149616, VDB-152020, VDB-152021 and VDB-177725.
