The Javascript method Sling.evalString() in Apache Sling Servlets Post before 2.3.22 uses the javascript 'eval' function to parse input strings, which allows for XSS attacks by passing specially crafted input strings.

The bug was discovered 08/14/2017. The weakness was presented 08/14/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-9802 since 06/21/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11853 (Apache Sling Cross-Site-Scripting Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 2.3.22 eliminates this vulnerability.
