The tokenizer in QPDF 6.0.0 and 7.0.b1 is recursive for arrays and dictionaries, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack consumption and segmentation fault) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a PDF document with a deep data structure, as demonstrated by a crash in QPDFObjectHandle::parseInternal in libqpdf/QPDFObjectHandle.cc.
The bug was discovered 08/22/2017. The weakness was disclosed 08/27/2017 (GitHub Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-12595 since 08/06/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
