Use-after-free vulnerability in the doImageText function in dix/dixfonts.c in the xorg-server module before 1.14.4 in X.Org X11 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted ImageText request that triggers memory-allocation failure.

The weakness was disclosed 10/08/2013 as Use after free in Xserver handling of ImageText requests as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-4396 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70450 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : xorg-x11-server (ELSA-2013-1426)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123461 (Fedora Security Update for nx-libs (FEDORA-2015-3953)).

Upgrading to version 1.15.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87768) and Tenable (70450). The entries 58334, 79571 and 79616 are pretty similar.
