Linux Kernel up to 4.13.5 net/packet/af_packet.c System Calls race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.13.5 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the file net/packet/af_packet.c. The manipulation as part of a System Calls leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

net/packet/af_packet.c in the Linux kernel before 4.13.6 allows local users to gain privileges via crafted system calls that trigger mishandling of packet_fanout data structures, because of a race condition (involving fanout_add and packet_do_bind) that leads to a use-after-free, a different vulnerability than CVE-2017-6346.

The bug was discovered 10/19/2017. The weakness was presented 10/19/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-15649 since 10/19/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104166 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2017-1194) (KRACK)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170433 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2017:2847-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.13.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104166) and Exploit-DB (44053). See 107859 for similar entry.
