Node.js up to 0.10.20 Pipelined Request input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Node.js up to 0.10.20 (JavaScript Library) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Pipelined Request Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The HTTP server in Node.js 0.10.x before 0.10.21 and 0.8.x before 0.8.26 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory and CPU consumption) by sending a large number of pipelined requests without reading the response.

The weakness was shared 09/12/2013 by Marek Majkowski as confirmed changelog entry (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at blog.nodejs.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4450 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 2 months, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70670 (Fedora 19 : libuv-0.10.18-1.fc19 / nodejs-0.10.21-1.fc19 (2013-19497)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11969.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (88171) and Tenable (70670). groups.google.com is providing further details. The entries VDB-99568 and VDB-224965 are related to this item.
