Linux Kernel up to 4.13.11 USB Device dvb_frontend.c dvb_frontend_free use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.13.11 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function dvb_frontend_free of the file drivers/media/dvb-core/dvb_frontend.c of the component USB Device Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The dvb_frontend_free function in drivers/media/dvb-core/dvb_frontend.c in the Linux kernel through 4.13.11 allows local users to cause a denial of service (use-after-free and system crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted USB device. NOTE: the function was later renamed __dvb_frontend_free.

The bug was discovered 11/07/2017. The weakness was presented 11/07/2017 by Andrey Konovalov (Website). The advisory is shared at The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-16648 since 11/07/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118513 (RHEL 7 : kernel-alt (RHSA-2018:2948) (Spectre)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237034 (Red Hat Update for kernel-alt (RHSA-2018:2948)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (118513).
