Debut Embedded http Server 1.20 HTTP Request access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The Debut embedded http server 1.20 contains a remotely exploitable denial of service where a single malformed HTTP request can cause the server to hang until eventually replying with an HTTP 500 error. While the server is hung, print jobs over the network are blocked and the web interface is inaccessible. An attacker can continuously send this malformed request to keep the device inaccessible to legitimate traffic. NOTE: this might overlap CVE-2017-12568.

The bug was discovered 11/02/2017. The weakness was published 11/10/2017 as EDB-ID 43119 as not defined exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-16249 since 10/31/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104900 (Brother Printer Debut embedded httpd <= 1.20 DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling . A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104900) and Exploit-DB (43119).
