Wireshark up to 2.4.2 NetBIOS Dissector packet-netbios.c unusual condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 2.4.2 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file epan/dissectors/packet-netbios.c of the component NetBIOS Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a unusual condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-754. The product does not check or incorrectly checks for unusual or exceptional conditions that are not expected to occur frequently during day to day operation of the product. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In Wireshark 2.4.0 to 2.4.2 and 2.2.0 to 2.2.10, the NetBIOS dissector could crash. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-netbios.c by ensuring that write operations are bounded by the beginning of a buffer.

The bug was discovered 11/30/2017. The weakness was disclosed 12/01/2017 as Bug 14249 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-17083 since 12/01/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 105121 (Debian DSA-4060-1 : wireshark - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170588 (OpenSUSE Security Update for wireshark (openSUSE-SU-2017:3202-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (105121). The entries 110148 and 110149 are pretty similar.
