Huawei EC156, EC176, and EC177 USB Modem products with software before UTPS-V200R003B015D02SP07C1014 (23.015.02.07.1014) and before V200R003B015D02SP08C1014 (23.015.02.08.1014) use a weak ACL for the "Mobile Partner" directory, which allows remote attackers to gain SYSTEM privileges by compromising a low privilege account and modifying Mobile Partner.exe.
The bug was discovered 10/21/2014. The weakness was released 12/11/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at huawei.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-8358 since 10/20/2014. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1147 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 23.015.02.07.1014 or 23.015.02.08.1014 eliminates this vulnerability.
