Linux Kernel 2.2/2.4/2.6 moxa.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.2/2.4/2.6 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file moxa.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Linux kernel 2.4.x and 2.6.x allows local users to cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) and bypass RLIM_MEMLOCK limits via the mlockall call.

The bug was discovered 01/10/2005. The weakness was published 01/11/2005 by Brad Spengler (Website). The advisory is shared at secunia.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2005-0179 since 01/28/2005. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21849 (CentOS 3 : kernel (CESA-2005:663)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115055 (Linux Kernel Multiple Vulnerabilities (RHSA-2005:092-14)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 10 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
