A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2003/2007 (Office Suite Software). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is an unknown code of the file epsimp32.flt of the component WordPerfect Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Office 2003 SP3 and 2007 SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted WordPerfect document (.wpd) file, aka "Word Heap Overwrite Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was presented 11/12/2013 by Will Dormann with CERT/CC as MS13-091 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1325 since 01/12/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/02/2021).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3648 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70849 (MS13-091: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2885093)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110225 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-091)).

Applying the patch MS13-091 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13166.
