A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.4/4.9.70/4.14.7 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function stub_recv_cmd_submit
of the file drivers/usb/usbip/stub_rx.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The "stub_recv_cmd_submit()" function (drivers/usb/usbip/stub_rx.c) in the Linux Kernel before version 4.14.8, 4.9.71, and 4.4.114 when handling CMD_SUBMIT packets allows attackers to cause a denial of service (arbitrary memory allocation) via a specially crafted USB over IP packet.
The bug was discovered 12/11/2017. The weakness was disclosed 01/31/2018 by Jakub Jirasek with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-16913 since 11/21/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 51 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108748 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:0848-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351264 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAC2012-2018-003).
Upgrading to version 4.4.114, 4.9.71 or 4.14.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (108748) and SecurityFocus (BID 102150†).
