Sun Solaris 9 Kerberos V5 libkadm5srv memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Sun Solaris 9 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown functionality in the library libkadm5srv of the component Kerberos V5. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The bug was discovered 12/20/2004. The weakness was presented 01/17/2005 by Michael Tautschnig with MIT Kerberos Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-1189 since 12/13/2004. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18834 (FreeBSD : krb5 -- heap buffer overflow vulnerability in libkadm5srv (0bb7677d-52f3-11d9-a9e7-0001020eed82)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115270 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2005-007 v1.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2005-08-17)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at web.mit.edu.It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18621) and Tenable (18834). See 1078, 22503, 22509 and 24976 for similar entries.
