ARM mbed TLS up to 1.3.21/2.1.9/2.6.x RSASSA-PSS Signature Verification Crafted Certificate memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in ARM mbed TLS up to 1.3.21/2.1.9/2.6.x. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component RSASSA-PSS Signature Verification. The manipulation as part of a Crafted Certificate leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

ARM mbed TLS before 1.3.22, before 2.1.10, and before 2.7.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (buffer overflow) via a crafted certificate chain that is mishandled during RSASSA-PSS signature verification within a TLS or DTLS session.

The bug was discovered 02/05/2018. The weakness was disclosed 02/13/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tls.mbed.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-0487 since 11/27/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106918 (openSUSE Security Update : mbedtls (openSUSE-2018-186)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170877 (OpenSUSE Security Update for mbedtls (openSUSE-SU-2018:0491-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.3.22, 2.1.10 or 2.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (106918) and SecurityFocus (BID 103056†).
