Microsoft Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit EMET 3.5 Tech Preview/4.0 Beta ASLR information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit EMET 3.5 Tech Preview/4.0 Beta. This issue affects an unknown function of the component ASLR. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) before 4.0 uses predictable addresses for hooked functions, which makes it easier for context-dependent attackers to defeat the ASLR protection mechanism via a return-oriented programming (ROP) attack.

The weakness was presented 06/17/2013 by Yu Yang with NSFocus as Microsoft EMET ASLR Mechanism Tampering Vulnerability as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at en.nsfocus.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-6791 since 11/13/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. The advisory points out:

Since EMET 3.5 Tech Preview, EMET enhances the protection for ROP via the Hook functions and other methods. But it stores the jump code for Inline Hook in the memory block with fixed address 0x6fff0000. This memory block keeps a number of physical addresses of hooked functions, and the offset is fixed. In other words, EMET provides more easily usable addresses for ROP while hooking system API to defeat ROP. These addresses are always fixed and even independent of impact of ASLR. Attackers can take advantage of these fixed addresses to directly launch ROP attacks without considering ASLR.

After 3 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71176 (Microsoft EMET 3.x >= 3.5 / 4.x < 4.0.4913.26122 ASLR Security Bypass), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Upgrading to version 4.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at microsoft.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (71176). See VDB-79485, VDB-80218, VDB-80857 and VDB-137815 for similar entries.
