Adobe Acrobat Reader Image Conversion Engine EMF/BMP File out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Adobe Acrobat Reader up to 2015.006.30394/2017.011.30070/2018.009.20050 (Document Reader Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Image Conversion Engine. The manipulation as part of a EMF/BMP File leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in Adobe Acrobat Reader 2018.009.20050 and earlier versions, 2017.011.30070 and earlier versions, 2015.006.30394 and earlier versions. This vulnerability occurs as a result of computation that reads data that is past the end of the target buffer; the computation is part of the image conversion engine when processing Enhanced Metafile Format (EMF) data that embeds an image in the bitmap (BMP) file format. A successful attack can lead to sensitive data exposure.

The bug was discovered 02/13/2018. The weakness was published 02/13/2018 by Steven Seeley (riusksk) with Zero Day Initiative as APSB18-02 as confirmed security bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at helpx.adobe.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-4884 since 01/03/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106846 (Adobe Reader <= 2015.006.30394 / 2017.011.30070 / 2018.009.20050 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB18-02)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370776 (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Multiple Security Vulnerabilities (APSB18-02)).

Upgrading to version 2015.006.30413, 2015.006.30416, 2017.011.30078 or 2018.011.20035 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
