Microsoft Internet Explorer 10/11 Permission input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 10/11 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Permission Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 and 11 allows local users to bypass the Protected Mode protection mechanism, and consequently gain privileges, by leveraging the ability to execute sandboxed code, aka "Internet Explorer Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 04/12/2011. The weakness was published 12/10/2013 by James Forshaw with Context Information Security as MS13-097 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-5045 since 08/06/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published 8 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 973 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71312 (MS13-097: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2898785)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100172 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-097)).

Applying the patch MS13-097 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89304), Tenable (71312) and Exploit-DB (33893).
