Microsoft Office 2013 and 2013 RT allows remote attackers to discover authentication tokens via a crafted response to a file-open request for an Office file on a web site, as exploited in the wild in 2013, aka "Token Hijacking Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 10/11/2012. The weakness was released 12/10/2013 by Noam Liran with Adallom as MS13-104 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-5054 since 08/06/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 425 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71319 (MS13-104: Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Could Allow Information Disclosure (2909976)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.

Applying the patch KB2850064 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
