An exploitable heap based buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the 'read_biff_next_record function' of FreeXL 1.0.3. A specially crafted XLS file can cause a memory corruption resulting in remote code execution. An attacker can send malicious XLS file to trigger this vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 09/11/2017. The weakness was released 04/24/2018 by Cisco with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-2923 since 12/01/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/07/2023).

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
