A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PostgreSQL up to 9.6.8/10.3 (Database Software). This issue affects the function pg_catalog.pg_logfile_rotate of the component adminpack. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a config vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-16. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

postgresql before versions 10.4, 9.6.9 is vulnerable in the adminpack extension, the pg_catalog.pg_logfile_rotate() function doesn't follow the same ACLs than pg_rorate_logfile. If the adminpack is added to a database, an attacker able to connect to it could exploit this to force log rotation.

The bug was discovered 04/30/2018. The weakness was presented 05/10/2018 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-1115 since 12/04/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592.004 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 10 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110955 (openSUSE Security Update : postgresql95 (openSUSE-2018-696)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351439 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for postgresql96: ALAS-2018-1119).

Upgrading to version 9.6.9 or 10.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
