A vulnerability was found in Foxit Reader and PhantomPDF up to 9.0 (Document Reader Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component U3D Handler. An issue was discovered in Foxit Reader before 9.1 and PhantomPDF before 9.1. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists when rendering U3D images inside of pdf files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a type confusion condition. An attacker can leverage this to execute code in the context of the current process.
The bug was discovered 05/07/2018. The weakness was presented 05/24/2018 by Steven Seeley with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at foxitsoftware.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-7407 since 02/22/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
