Linux Kernel up to 4.17.3 kernel/time/alarmtimer.c alarm_timer_nsleep ktime_add_safe integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.17.3 (Operating System). Affected is the function alarm_timer_nsleep of the file kernel/time/alarmtimer.c. The manipulation of the argument ktime_add_safe with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The alarm_timer_nsleep function in kernel/time/alarmtimer.c in the Linux kernel through 4.17.3 has an integer overflow via a large relative timeout because ktime_add_safe is not used.

The bug was discovered 06/27/2018. The weakness was disclosed 07/02/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-13053 since 07/02/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111329 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:2051-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197306 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux, Linux-aws, Linux-kvm, Linux-raspi2, Linux-snapdragon Vulnerabilities (USN-3821-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (111329). The entries 120203, 120483, 120484 and 122170 are pretty similar.
