Xelerance Openswan 3.7 IKEv2 Packet resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Xelerance Openswan 3.7. Affected is an unknown functionality of the component IKEv2 Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Openswan 2.6.39 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and IKE daemon restart) via IKEv2 packets that lack expected payloads.

The weakness was published 01/15/2014 by Iustina Melinte as CVE-2013-6467.txt as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at libreswan.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-6466 since 11/04/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

Iustina Melinte used a custom IKE fuzzer to test libreswan. By withholding or renumbering certain IKEv2 payloads, the pluto IKE daemon crashes while trying to dereference a NULL pointer on the presumably received payload. Configurations that only allow IKEv1 are not vulnerable.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72561 (CentOS 5 / 6 : openswan (CESA-2014:0185)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 3.8 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting ikev2=never. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90524), Tenable (72561), SecurityFocus (BID 65155†), OSVDB (102579†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-43429†). Similar entries are available at VDB-54903, VDB-54905, VDB-54906 and VDB-54907.
