A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in plexus-archiver up to 3.5.x. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Extraction. The manipulation with the input value ../
leads to a path traversal vulnerability (Zip-Slip). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
plexus-archiver before 3.6.0 is vulnerable to directory traversal, allowing attackers to write to arbitrary files via a ../ (dot dot slash) in an archive entry that is mishandled during extraction. This vulnerability is also known as 'Zip-Slip'.
The bug was discovered 04/13/2018. The weakness was disclosed 07/25/2018 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-1002200 since 07/25/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 62 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110536 (CentOS 7 : plexus-archiver (CESA-2018:1836)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351305 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for plexus-archiver: ALAS2-2018-1043).
Upgrading to version 3.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (110536). The entries VDB-113959, VDB-122178, VDB-122179 and VDB-122180 are pretty similar.
