F5 BIG-IP up to 11.5.6/ vCMP input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in F5 BIG-IP up to 11.5.6/ (Firewall Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component vCMP. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

Through undisclosed methods, on F5 BIG-IP 13.0.0-, 12.1.0-, 11.6.0-, or 11.2.1-11.5.6, adjacent network attackers can cause a denial of service for VCMP guest and host systems. Attack must be sourced from adjacent network (layer 2).

The bug was discovered 07/25/2018. The weakness was presented 07/25/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at support.f5.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-5531 since 01/11/2018. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 118691 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : vCMP vulnerability (K64721111)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371105 (F5 BIG-IP ASM vCMP denial of service vulnerability (K64721111)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (118691). See 122192 and 122195 for similar entries.
