PostgreSQL up to 9.3.23/9.4.18/9.5.13/9.6.9/10.4 Statement improper authorization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in PostgreSQL up to 9.3.23/9.4.18/9.5.13/9.6.9/10.4 (Database Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component Statement Handler. The manipulation with the input value INSERT ... ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE leads to a improper authorization vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-285. The product does not perform or incorrectly performs an authorization check when an actor attempts to access a resource or perform an action. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

It was discovered that PostgreSQL versions before 10.5, 9.6.10, 9.5.14, 9.4.19, and 9.3.24 failed to properly check authorization on certain statements involved with "INSERT ... ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE". An attacker with "CREATE TABLE" privileges could exploit this to read arbitrary bytes server memory. If the attacker also had certain "INSERT" and limited "UPDATE" privileges to a particular table, they could exploit this to update other columns in the same table.

The bug was discovered 08/09/2018. The weakness was shared 08/09/2018 by Andrew as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-10925 since 05/09/2018. The attack may be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1548.002.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111653 (Debian DSA-4269-1 : postgresql-9.6 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171675 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for postgresql96 (SUSE-SU-2018:3377-1)).

Upgrading to version 9.3.24, 9.4.19, 9.5.14, 9.6.10 or 10.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (111653). The entry 122743 is related to this item.
