Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 11/12 SQL Database sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 11/12 (Anti-Malware Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component SQL Database Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

SQL injection vulnerability in the management console in Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) 11.0 before 11.0.7405.1424 and 12.1 before 12.1.4023.4080, and Symantec Protection Center Small Business Edition 12.x before 12.1.4023.4080, allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary SQL commands via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 02/13/2014 by Stefan Viehböck and Johannes Greil with SEC Consult as SYM14-004 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at symantec.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-5015 since 07/29/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Chris Graham (cgrahamseven) in Python and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72542 (Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager < 11.0 RU7-MP4a / 12.1 RU4a Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM14-004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121808 (Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM14-004)). The ISC announces an increase of scan attempts of the affected ports: "Last week, we mentioned a new vulnerability in Symantec Endpoint Protection Management [1]. According to Symantec's advisory, this product listens on port 9090 and 8443/TCP. Both ports are scanned regularly for various vulnerabilities, in particular 8443, being that it is frequently used by web servers as an alternative to 443. However, on February 7th, we detected a notable increase in scans for both ports."

Upgrading to version 11.0 RU7-MP4a (11.0.7405.1424) or 12.1 RU4a (12.1.4023.4080) eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at symantec.flexnetoperations.com.Proper firewalling of tcp/9090 (http) / tcp/8443 (https) is able to address this issue. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

Blocking port 9090 will deny access to online help and other web-based features. Blocking port 8443 will deny access to all remote consoles, replication, and Symantec Network Access Control Enforcer communication. Administrators may configure firewall rules to allow access to port 9090 or 8443 from explicit hosts or IP addresses to enable these features.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (91103), Tenable (72542) and Exploit-DB (31853). Additional details are provided at zdnet.com. The entry 12321 is pretty similar.
