A null-pointer dereference vulnerability was found in libtirpc before version 0.3.3-rc3. The return value of makefd_xprt() was not checked in all instances, which could lead to a crash when the server exhausted the maximum number of available file descriptors. A remote attacker could cause an rpc-based application to crash by flooding it with new connections.
The bug was discovered 08/22/2018. The weakness was released 08/30/2018 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.linux-nfs.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-14622 since 07/27/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Upgrading to version 0.3.3-rc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.linux-nfs.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
